Utopian book?

Ah. I think it starts off with a boy who plays video games because he has nothing better to do, and is paralyzed..? Then some scientists test him in, using some sort of "dream state" where he can walk again but has a mission in this dream world. There's also I think a mermaid in this book? I truly forget help??
