Help!

A desperate search (on behalf of my partner) for a book that features large, alien tripods made of wood / reed continues!

Has anyone read such a book and -more importantly- can they remember what it is?

It's NOT anything from John Christopher's 'Tripod' series. This much has been established.

The book involves several colonies (which for a time know not of each others existence) and the aforementioned alien tripods.

Any advice appreciated.

Regards,

Quenzer.

Ooh, that's an odd-sounding one! Can't help you myself, but I'll move this thread over to Book Search, which is where we keep a small colony of know-everythings who can usually answer even the most difficult questions! Good luck in the search. (And if your partner is interested in SF, why don't the two of you stick around and have a good look at Chrons and all we do.)

It wouldn't be some sort of spin-off "Rendezvous with Rama?" The aliens in that book were said to surprisingly developed a tri-pedal motion.

Yeah if the wooden tripods are actually plants it does sound like the Triffids.

Hi everyone - thank you for taking the time to reply.

My partner has provided further details of the novel she is trying to remember and they are thus:

-different groups are sent down onto a planet to colonise it. They aren't in contact with each other and are told they are placed too far away from each other to ever meet.

-they have to start their colonies from scratch and I believe they have some sort of robot to help them. It can plant seeds, do first aid etc.

-the colony the book follows is next to a lake. There are meant to be no life forms on the planet.

-one man likes to go down to the lake. He notices eventually that things are moving from one visit to another.

-he eventfully sees the reed/wooden tripod aliens. I don't think there is much interaction between humans and aliens, but could be wrong.

-there are tripod aliens that can fly too.

-something happens (and I can't remember what) that leaves the group with more men than women. There are jealousy problems towards those men who have partners.

-fighting breaks out within the group over the lack of women. It ends up that most people are killed and I think all that is left a man, woman, and child.

-they have to leave the lake. I think something like an ice age is happening but can't be sure. I have a clear memory of the robot carrying the child.

-they finally come across another group of people, and realise they were lied to by the people who put them on the planet.

-things get hazier here. The kids grow up and I think the planet is somehow put back in touch with Earth. The children who have been born on the planet have no interest in Earth. The main male character leaves for earth.

Thanks again for your suggestions so far.

It's definitely not Day of the Triffads and from the synopsis I have read, not Rendezvous with Rama either.

When did they read this book? A start point would be helpful.

If it was a library book there would be a listing upon her borrowing record. If it was borrowed from a friend, they would know. If she read it in a bookstore, they would have a list of possible titles and the synopsis.
Where did she have the book, and where is it now? If it was at a hospital from the cart, it would still be there. The volunteers would have an idea.
If it was donated, again there would be a record, and the donations shop may still have it.
Still looking, but I have broadened the parameters.
