Grimmelshausen's Simplicissimus

' the Simplicissimus series attained a readership larger than any other seventeenth-century novel.'
Must be worth a look. Hard to believe anything so old isn't based on fact as much as fiction.

Interesting stuff.Ive never heard of this one.(y)

It's a classic and certainly on your required reading list if you want to attain a university degree in German. To fully appreciate it you'd have to have a thorough understanding of the period, though.

And one more caveat concerns language: Even for an academic whose native language is German, this is hard going. On the other hand I can hardly imagine how it could be translated into English without losing its "flavour".

You can easily have a gander yourself, though. The book is accessible on the internet (Projekt Gutenberg: Simplicius Simplicissimus von Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen - Text im Projekt Gutenberg)
