The book I'm trying to remember is fairly new-- probably last 10-20 years. It's about a small group of scientists who find a way to alter luck or karma or probability in a given area, so it becomes a 'better place'. Unfortunately, this upsets the universal apple cart and they get ejected into alternate universes, each with a different level of karma. A large part of the book is their exploration of these universes and their attempts to get back.

I think the basis for the concept might have to do with the Kaballah, but I'm not sure. It had that feel, though.

My first thought was Karma by Arsen Darney, but that is 35+ years old.

No, def not. I remember the cover looks a lot like The Rosetta Codex by Richard Russo, but that's def not the book either. I vaguely remember a word something like "codex" in the title, which is how I happened on Russo's book.
