It was fairly short and I remember it being a short story selection from a book full of other short stories. This book gave off a very late-70's/early 80's vibe to me, though I read it in the mid-90's as a child. I also remember this particular story being nicely illustrated, unlike some of the other stories with wonky artwork. (And a wonky book binding art with a little boy walking a pet dinosaur on a leash)
Another thing I realized about the book is that the stories were shortened, so maybe this wasn't meant to be a short story after all. I know this because one of my favorite stories at the time were in this big book and it was obviously crunched down and there were no torn pages in it.
So, on with what I can remember. Basically, there are two red-haired (or very, very bright red-orange haired) children in space who are minding their own business while living in this obvious space-station (near the moon? On Mars?) The kids both wish to go to Earth really badly, and look at the Earth often from the window.
There's also a scene with some old boss-like man talking to their father, but I don't remember what he said.
(Most people in this story were smiling ear-to-ear ALL the time. I thought they were a part of some space cult)
One day, their parents come up to them saying that they have a 'surprise' for them. They tell the children that they are going to be taking a trip to earth and that they need to 'get ready'. By getting ready, they mean exercising on these elliptical-like machines to get used to the Earth's pressure/atmosphere.
The mother tells them of how things 'used to be' and the kids look on in wonder.
(There's also a scene with them blowing milk bubbles into the no-gravity air and their mother smiles and scolds them--- or something)
The ''big day'' comes and they land onto Earth in this little pod. The kids exit, amazed at what they see and in their amazement, their parents give them the 'go-ahead' to go and play. The kids break free laughing, rolling around on the grass and saying how much fun and different it is and how happy they are. The parents are in a background near a tree, talking to themselves that 'maybe' they should move here permanently and it might be good for the kids.
Then the book ends.
If any of you could give me a title, and more info, it would be greatly appreciated. I can't find any more reference to this anywhere.
(I ended up throwing the book away as a child because a crushed a huge spider with it. Stupid.)
It's driving me crazy mainly because I want to know what year the author set this in. Years in fiction (especially futuristic ones) are important to me.
Also, endings with people from awesome futuristic and high-tec worlds or societies choosing to stay on Earth bug me and irritates me to no end.
