Why did Dread Empire's Fall series not take off?

I read the first two books, but there was just something a little lacking to make me dive into the third. I may still have it on my shelf somewhere, but I haven't really felt the need to finish reading the series. It was actually an interesting idea, but I guess the characters were ultimately a little thin and uninteresting. For me at least.

I really enjoyed this series.

The characters are no thinner than other space opera series' and I thought that the space battles were pretty well written.

Im struggling a little through the last book.

For me, I didn't understand the whole uppity nature of the military. They have fine dining on military vessels, and officers with servants, and a captain who has a painter on-board. I didn't get it.

is this a riff on the naval days of yore where the officers were kings and the captain was a god?

Finished the last book. Pretty meh.

I realized that his writing style (at least in these books) involves a lot of "telling" - like long segments of the book is just summarizing stuff that happened.

I started the first book and I just couldn't finish it.

I finished the first book and thought the premise was far superior to the execution.

Although the space combat was very well done and the series clearly had some consideration about economy and religion etc. I just think it could have been better written.
