Over the years I've had my desk squeezed into spaces in my bedroom, the dining room, and the living room. It's been in closets and other dark corners, and once outside in a storage shed (although we had that fixed up very nicely, and the only problem was that it was cold in winter). We've had a sort of floating population with immediate family members moving in and out and other relatives who had nowhere else to go, so my desk has floated with it, as bedrooms were exchanged and various other spaces doubled as bedrooms or were adapted to new uses. (So far, no one has ever had to sleep in the bathroom or the kitchen, although if we'd had a spare bathroom I don't doubt we'd have squeezed a bed in at some point.)
Now I'm fortunate enough to have a whole room as a dedicated office, although there are times I have to defend my territory fiercely.
