News has been received of the death due to heart failure of Paul S. Ritz in Florida.

I believe that Paul was a prominent member of a Mythopoeic Society branch at Bowling Green State University in Ohio in the early 1970s. Also in the 1970s, Paul was a key figure in the creation of the fantasy apa Elanor. (He may have been the founder.) This may have been the first amateur press association devoted (in theory!) to the discussion of fantasy in the vein of the Inklings -- J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams -- and kindred authors such as Ursula Le Guin, Patricia McKillip, Lloyd Alexander, and others. (I believe it was at about the same time that other people started apas devoted to swords-and sorcery [REHupa] and Lovecraft [Esoteric Order of Dagon].)

Paul became active in fandom devoted to the Oz books of L. Frank Baum and successor authors. He was a children's librarian but had retired.

I expect to be able to post further information here eventually, and would welcome details from anyone who sees this and has material to share. It would be appropriate also to fill outthe brief entry on Paul at the Fancyclopedia III.
