Nicholas Fisk 1923 - 2016

Sad (I mean, a little - 92 is a good age). A Rag, A Bone and a Hank of Hair is a formative book for me, and I loved Grinny and Trillions. He had an ability to combine adventure and excitement with genuine creepiness and outright scares.

Nicholas Fisk was one of my favourite authors growing up - he really did get me into SF. I particularly remember the "Starstormers" series, a space opera featuring a bunch of kids in a spaceship made from a hollowed-out asteroid versus an evil nanobot entity. And "Trillions" has one of the most original concepts for an alien life form I've ever read,

That's an excellent point about Trillions, it seemed utterly original when I first encountered it. I think many people really liked Grinny.
