NPR published an article today that reminded me of an older syfy book. Now I'm going crazy trying to remember the title!
The ship is somehow lost in a turbulent black hole like phenomena. There's a team of navigators lead by an older, experienced man. He's Polynesian. He was raised on a sort of reservation where he was trained to navigate his canoe like boat by stars and to know dangers of waves, etc. He saves the day.
I read this book within the last 20 years. A Google search was not helpful. I thought that I would try here.
