Hi, been searching for this short story read in 1970s in anthology of scifi. Plot is about humans having a chip inserted at birth that contains record of one's wealth. As you earn or borrow, chip is debited; as you spend or pay back, it is credited. When chip hits zero balance, you die.

This sounds interesting. Is there anything else you can remember about it? Maybe another story or two that was in the same collection? Is there a main character? If so, man or woman, old or young, etc.? Does the main character hit a zero balance or come close to it? How? Do people normally have positive or negative balances up until the point they die?

How about "Time is Money" by Lee Falk, which was published in 1975? Also, the film "In Time" (2011) has a similar plot.

I'll check out Time is Money. Main character was a man, middle age, down on his luck, having to deal with a loan shark cause his balance had gone critically low, due to bad investments, gambling, poor choices, etc. My memory of any further detail is faulty. Recent developments in embedded chip technology to hold bank balances brought back the story from the deep recesses of my brain.
