An article I was reading about Tudor cookery mentioned Cowdray Estate Castle (aka Cowdray House or Cowdray Ruins) near Midhurst in West Sussex, and referred to the second Viscount Montague and his book of household rules which he drew up (or possibly amended from an earlier version) for his servants in 1595.

If anyone writing fantasy which is based, however remotely, on a Tudor nobleman's household, this looks to be invaluable.

It's been tidied up and made easily readable in a pdf here http://elizabethan.org/book-of-orde...d-Rules-by-Anthony-Viscount-Montague-1595.pdf but it's also interesting to see the transcript of the original, complete with eccentric spelling and lack of paragraphs here in the Collections of the Sussex Archeological Society, which also has a very Victorian introduction which is entertaining and informative in its own right (and somewhat pompous and long winded -- did I mention very Victorian!)
