There are a couple of classic sf books about a hospital ship in space. I think the books are collections of short stories about the same characters.

Does anyone know either the titles or author?

There's the obvious James White Hospital Ship, which I recall reading aeons ago. There must be a lot of 'medlab' situations in various spaceship SF. I think I read the one you are referencing too, but can't recall wotsit called.

While James White's 'Sector General' series (14 books and three omnibusses with 'Hospital Station' and 'Ambulance Ship') seems the most likely choice, I have a couple of other specialised medical ships in my bookshelves, including.

GRRMartin Tuf Voyaging

Jody Lynn Nye - The 'Taylor's Ark' trilogy

Star Surgeon by Alan E Nourse, which is on Project Gutenberg. But the James White was my first thought too.

It's not about a hospital space station, but Murray Leinster's Med Service series would basically apply. Hubbard's Ole Doc Methusaleh series also features a sort of superdoctor. While White's guy sometimes makes housecalls, these guys basically always do.

These are kind of loose but Martin's Tuf series mentioned above may be too loose - it's an ecological seedship rather than a medical facility, as such, and Tuf treats mostly sociological problems rather than medical. But it is true that it does obviously deal with biology and has medical capacities (along with many other sorts). Great series, either way.
