The Exact Year De Niro Gave Up on Acting

Tried to watch some of his more recent films, but they're too horribly sexist to enjoy. Last Vegas was just old men leching at young women; Grudge Match was more interesting for Stallone, not least after DeNiro's character talks oral sex by analogy to his kid - yack.

I think Bob just got bored with serious acting by around the turn of the millennium.

Perhaps he thought he had done enough to prove to Hollywood that he is/was an outstanding actor beginning from the early 70s to the mid 90s. And from that point on he just wanted to pick and choose roles, probably putting money before professional pride first.

The last film I saw of his was "Ronin" from 1999. A pretty decent film in all honesty, although probably not all that challenging for an actor like De Niro. But he was still good to watch.

I can't vouch or comment for his 21st century output, but looking at some of the ratings on IMDb and RT, he hasn't really set the world alight at all.

Shame really. But at least he will always have a great legacy to be reminded of.

I think this was the last I watched too. I haven't been able to sit through any since then. Still, (to paraphrase Bogey in Casablanca) we'll always have the Deer Hunter.

"The Deer Hunter"

Haven't seen that in ages! Must add that to my "must watch" list for January. That and "Mean Streets"

Thank you (y)

I guess 2002 is pretty accurate. 2001's The Score was excellent, and Brando's last film. Apparently Brando took two careers with him.

Part of his performances in films like Goodfellas and Cape Fear was the menace that he demonstrated so well. Keeping it cool but with violence simmering under the surface and ready to suddenly explode when he deemed the moment right. Later in his career he switched to comedy roles. Probably easier and the character often matched well with having a dangerous past.
That said I though Meet the Fockers had some funny moments. More for the lines than any remarkable acting. I think now he may find it hard to act a scary character without being hammy. Still a legend!

The only stand-out comedy that I really enjoyed was "Midnight Run" (1988). It made for a great double-act with Charles Grodin, who provided most of the laughs as De Niro's stooge.

I think I read somewhere that De Niro wanted to take a break from serious roles after completing "The Untouchables". He wanted something light and funny for his next role, and that's when Midnight Run came along.

A pretty decent film too, and worth checking out

Yeah, it's a great film, with some extremely funny one-liners ...

"Is this moron number one? Put moron number two on the phone."

" You put Marvin on this case you ****in' piece of s***! You ****ing, deceptive mother****r; you vermin! You slimeball in a sea of pus!"

"You have two emotions, silence and rage!"

"Jack, nothing personal, but **** off!"

"You and that other dummy better start getting more personally involved in your work, or I'm gonna stab you through the heart with a ****in' pencil. Do you understand me?"

"You two are the dumbest bounty hunters I have ever seen! You couldn't even deliver a bottle of milk!"

:LOL::lol:
