A game of simulated historical battles

I read this book sometime between the mid 80s and the early 90s. The plot revolves around a man who competes against others via a computerized form of historical wargaming where the players control everything from overall strategy down to taking over individuals on the battlefield.

One interesting aspect of the story is that occasionally a player will stumble upon a strategy to a particular battle that always succeeds. The book has a name for these unbeatable strategies, but I can't remember what it is. Anyway, any ideas?
 
I'm pretty sure this *isn't* it, but Orson Scott Card has a short story in his 'Worthing Saga' collection about computerised historical wargaming. However, that isn't a book and doesn't have the point you mentioned in your second paragraph, so probably not what you wanted...
