The importance of pricing your ebook

I enjoyed that read. Thanks for sharing Brian

Yes, I've been reading some of Rusch's information and I have the 'Discoverability' ebook which is probably a consolidation of her columns in this series. Very interesting and a useful resource especially when I manage to get more than one out. As I understand it, she has a lot of reservations with 'free' and advises discounting your first only when you have at least 3 out. Not the approach advocated on some self publishing forums I've been on but I think I'm more comfortable with her advice.

The premise of having at least 3 books published before doing any marketing sounds like solid advice to me - the returns are surely going to come not from people buying into the discounted novel but from the upsell into additional full price books.

As near as I can tell, there are two different strategies regarding discounting/publishing.

First strategy:

Write a short work that contains a narrative question answered in your series. Give away that short work via FB ads in order to build an email list. Prepare to release your series, a minimum of three books, thirty days apart. Massively promote your first book release at a .99 price point while it's on the HNR list. Your goal is to launch it into the top 100/500/1000 paid in the Kindle story and keep it there. You probably lose money on that first book, but sales of your next two full price releases more than make up for it.

Second strategy:

Write a series of books. Use temporary price drops and promotions on the first book during the month that the sequels are released. Make sure to include links in the book to build your email list. Can be used in conjunction with the short work/FB ad tactic in the first strategy.
