This is a science fiction novel i read when i was a kid, i can't remember all, but it gave me the sense of being similar to treasure island. It had whale like animals that could navigate space, which the protagonist discovered could be used for inter-planetary flight. the final thing i remember was that there was some kind of epidemic which we finally discovered that the protagonist had the cure in his blood.

The whale-like animals remind me of 'The Reefs Of Space' by Frederic Pohl and Jack Williamson, but I don't remember if the rest of the plot matches. Did the hero have to wear an explosive collar?

Based on Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Treasure Planet is a 2002 American animated science fiction action-adventure film[2] produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The 43rd Disney animated feature film, it is a science fiction adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's adventure novel Treasure Island (1883), and it is at least the third retelling of the story in an outer space setting, following The Treasure Planet (1982) and the miniseries Treasure Island in Outer Space (1987).[3] It is the third Disney adaptation of the novel, following Treasure Island (1950) and Muppet Treasure Island (1996). In the film's setting, spaceships are powered by solar sails and resemble the 18th-century sailing vessels of the original Treasure Island.
