SciFi/fantasy book bought in 1989 or 1990. Cannot remember the title or author. Group of people driving on a long trip North in an old car. Some kind of wizard in the backseat who awakens when he hears the engine not running properly and motions for a girl driving to switch off the engine. The wizard uses magic to remove a gear from an airplane engine in a junkyard to fix the car's oil pump gear. He puts the gear in using magic while rubbing his hands together. Title may have the word "Polar" or some variant in it? Paperback with an artist rendered cover. Maybe blue in color.

when I see wizards and cars and mechanics I always think of a series called serrated edge. never read any, just remember seeing them years ago in my local library. the covers show like fast cars and wizards and elves.

Serrated Edge is a Mercedes Lackey series, but from what I remember, this doesn't sound like any of those.

another stab at this - Walls of Air by Barbara Hambly (middle book of Darwath trilogy ) ?

since the 'Walls of Air' post I've managed to score a free download and skimmed through it - WRONG! - so the original query is still open people...

Any chance it is one of the books in Simon Hawke's Wizard series that started in the late eighties? The only two I have read were the first books in the series - "The Wizard of Fourth Street" and "The Wizard of Whitechapel" - but because I could not get in to the books I really do not remember anything about them.
