The Ambassador or something

I'm looking for a certain book, called "The Ambassador" "The Emissary" or something along those lines. On the front are three, dark skinned, somewhat large humanoids with rifles, in the middle stands a human woman, herself undersized compared to them, the aliens themselves looking near human. I don't remember what this book is called, but the aliens are REALLY dark coloured.

The small human, amidst much taller dark aliens, with rifles sounds awfully like Cherryh's Foreigner series. Problem is, its a man not a woman, and I'm not sure there are 3 aliens on any cover. There are two, or four, depending on the book. For instance:

Yes, very tall, dark and humanoid - does sound like atevi. And book 6, 'Explorer' does have three atevi and Bren on the cover, even if the aiji dowager is barely taller than a human and carries a cane rather than a firearm (though starting the series there…? Grimaces)

And several have just Jago with Bren.
