I'm trying to remember a book about a future society where humans have joined an interspecies coalition. The story of the book is about of a group of graduate students that, as a test or for a project, are sent to an uninhabited planet to discover as much as they can about it.
The group members I remember are
- a female human (the main pov character)
- a floating alien with just a body, four arms, delicate skin, and no discernible head
- a alien that looks similar to the last one but is much bigger and has a thick armor-like skin
- a centipede-like alien
and maybe one or two more.
The human and one or two of the others get trapped in an underground cave with a river of nitrogen (or something similar) in it and have to use a robot programmed to detect wind patterns to escape.
I would guess the book is from the 80s or the 90s.
