This regular American novel, possibly from the Nineties, is a coming of age story about a shy male teen who has a friend who's a teenage delinquent type, antisocial and violent. The protagonist is also infatuated with a blond girl that apparently has already slept with lots of boys. Pushed into action by the taunts of his delinquent friend, the boy finally musters the courage to attempt a sexual encounter with the girl, but, while they're starting to 'make out', he's astounded to discover that the girl is really a boy... and not only a boy, but precisely his male friend. That scene is heralded as "one of the most explosive sexual scenes of the year' in the back cover, if I remember correctly. To complicate things, his friend suffers from multiple personalities, and is not aware of his female side. Have been trying to find out the name of the novel or the author for years. Any ideas?
