The pursuit of my youth... in English

Hi there ! I’m French and I have and intermediate/advanced level in English. I decided that to achieve further progress I should read more (a lot more) English books. I’m a big fan of Science-Fiction, fantastic, Heroic-Fantasy books. I remember the good old days (Everything seems better back to our youth… ) when I was reading a lot of pulp fiction from an editor named « Fleuve Noir » (Black River). The collection I used to read was called « Anticipation .» The majority of those novels were written by French authors but not always. They were science-fiction stories, fantastic, fantasy etc. Most of the books I have read were written in the 80s (I was a teenager and participated -without knowing it- to the elaboration of the geek culture… Yep it’s now a big business… even the good old days have a selling price…) and… ah… my imagination and my stimulation were really fertilized by those books. Simple stories, simple characters, but colorful and exotic worlds. I really put the emphasis on that: simple story, simple characters. It's what I'm searching for.

I would like to know if something comparable exists is the U.S, the U.K etc. I’m not talking about magazines like « Amazing Stories » (otherwise excellent) but short novels -approximately 200 pages- written in the Eighties from a single editor (I like the idea of a collection because it does imply a direction, an editorial line).

Any Idea ?

Mmm... Fleuve Noir. Il y avait de tout, bon et mauvais. Anyway, as a French myself, but living in England for a long time, I'm also a fan of SF, Fantasy, etc... I think for stuff written in the eighties, DAW books published fantasy and Swords & Sorcery, among others, Tanith Lee, CJ Cherry, MZ Bradley. There is also Gollancz, which still exists and published a bit of everything from SF to Fantasy and there is BAEN. About it, the Wikipedia entry states:
Baen Books is an American publishing house for science fiction and fantasy. In science fiction, it emphasizes space opera, hard science fiction, and military science fiction.

For all of them, the length of the novels published were usually shorter than nowadays.

Hi Elvraie ;o) Salut je veux dire ;o)

BAEN Books is really what I'm searching for! They have a really big collection of almost... everything! Perfect ;o)
