I was packing some books years ago, saw one I'd missed, and set it aside to read later. I never found it again. The author's name may begin with a B and it may have been 20-40 years old.
A human wakes up confined in a translucent cube-shaped cage. There is a small moss-like substance against the wall of the cube and a small amount of water. Around him are unending rows and stacks of the cubes, all with beings in them. He tries to communicate with the alien in the cage next to him. Days pass. He is extremely hungry. He sees his neighbor eat a bit of its brown moss. He tries his and eats it all, ignoring the neighbor, who indicates he leave some. Big mistake.
