A YA book, from before 1995, where a society of kids is stuck on a deteriorating generation ship. The adults and maintenance machines have died or broken down, and they have very little fuel left. The kids are now teens and have formed a society with leaders. Unbeknownst to them the captain of the ship had been stuck in an area with low gravity for years because higher gravity would kill him. For some reason, I think it has "exile" in the title.

I thought of End of Exile also but this person said the captain was a man in low gravity habitat. End of Exile has a woman priestess as the adult. ... however that low gravity does strike a faint memory chord with me so I've prob read that tale; trouble is there's loads of generation ship stories

It's just a homogenised subject generation ship stories thats the problem most ive read end up more or less the same general storyline only been surprised by a few

Agreed, they usually end up being predictable and depressing. Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds being a rare exception.

Brian Aldiss NonStop was the one that surprised me and maybe a few when i was a sprogg can't remember the names though and today John Thorntons colony ship series i read to my grandson

There are several dozen possible matches over at ISFDB: see here. If you look over the list, you might recognize the full title or the author's name.

In addition to those, there is also Bruno G. Condray's Exile from Jupiter (1955), which is categorized as a "chapter book" instead of a "novel".

If you spot it, please do post back with the correct one, for the benefit of future searchers. Welcome to the forum!
