I remember reading something about this from Writer's Digest or similar: he would write on yellow pad for around four hours daily, then after lunch, revise what he wrote.

This reminds me of a colleague, who wrote romance novels, share something similar: she would take yellow pad, draw a triangle, and then create the conflicting relationship from there. With variations she could come up with one novel after another.

Finally, t also reminds me of Roald Dahl. I think one edition of his collected stories (Everyman), it was noted that it took him a long time to write each story because he wanted something unlike the rest, but experienced difficulties in doing so.
