(Found) Minor alien character's race hunted for their skin

Hello, please help me find the name of this book! Here is what I can remember:

-Teen/Young adult book written before 2010
-JT or TJ is main character's name
-Title started with an O; sounded like Orbit xyz
-One of the minor characters had a compellingly horrible appearance; Later revealed his race had valuable skin that was hunted down and peeled and sold; which results in this character traveling around in a special wheelchair
-Humans have chips that enable them to learn information as quickly as copying files
-Main character later restrained by someone who wanted him to use his mind to break restraints, which he did

I think there are 2-3 books in this series. It also won some kind of award with the kind of round metallic stickers on its cover. The covers are blue/dark green and all look kind of the same.

you're quite welcome. I picked one of them up in local library last year amongst a pile of others and didn't realise until at home and reading that it was aimed at teenagers. (still read it though, just to see what happened at the end - and THEN realised it was a series! )

Haha I don't even remember the ending, just this minor character who somehow popped into one of my dreams recently and suddenly I'm trying to find a book I read in middle school!
