I'm after the title and author of a classic sci-fi story that has the following plot: a nefarious company claims to sell travel by matter-transmitter; but really all they have is a matter-duplicator, and they kill off the original. The story was printed about 1960 or earlier. I suspect it is from a science fiction magazine.

Does anyone have any ideas?

The Prestige by Christopher Priest uses this plot device, but that was published in the mid 90s.
Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys is closer in date but does not quite fit the plot you describe.

It does sound Rogue Moon-y, Hitmouse... (a favorite novella of mine; btw just read Budrys's Who? for the third time).

I really liked The Prestige. I thought the book was more interesting than the film, although I did like the film as well.

Sounds like "Think Like a Dinosaur" by James Patrick Kelly (however, it was published in 1995).
