I am occasionally (ie never) asked what happened between the time of the Space Captain Smith books and now. Well, the short answer is that things got very bad before they got (arguably) better.

This is a tale from that dark and twisted age, when bandits ruled the highways, existential angst gripped the Earth and even the one-proud nation of France was overcome by a wave of deadly mime crime. Messures-dames, je vous presente:

Sadly there isn't one! The standard joke in the UK is that all philosophers are French, so it seemed natural to set it there (and include all the phrases from French class when you're 11). The contrast between "difficult" 50s art house films and cars ramming into one another struck me as amusing, too.
