I've been searching for a young adult book series for a while and have about given up hope that it exists.
The first book starts when the protagonist whose name escapes me but I can tell you for sure that he's from the Scottish highlands wakes up in a spaceship. They're on it because they are going to some kind of jail/juvinele detention center thing. The ship was damaged and can't make it. He's given a choice between letting the ship keep going and hope that someday finds them or rerouting it to a planet that no one's been on but is probably habitable.
He decides to land the spaceship and they crash on a planet that has psychic trees and monkeys(?) that take care of them. The main problems are the worms that eat the psychic trees and one of the prisoners on the ship.
There's an entire series of I think four books and they figure out a way back to Earth in like the second or third one but for the life of me I can't find it or anyone who's read this. Does anyone have a clue what this might be?
