Shall we read and discuss these books? Put Out More Flags is considered to be the very funny, very melancholy novel of the Phony War and to be an overture to Sword of Honour, a trilogy of three novels: Men at Arms, Officers and Gentlemen, Unconditional Surrender). The trilogy is sometimes considered Waugh's greatest literary achievement.
If they are still available online, I recommend David Cliffe's detailed notes on the three books of the trilogy. They helped me a lot in 2004, when I first read the trilogy. They were available as A Companion to Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honour Trilogy. The notes for Officers and Gentlemen at least seem still to be available:
