Middle-aged Jean’s life is a chaotic and miserable existence. Her job as a carer should provide her and her husband, Bernard, with just enough money to manage, but Bernard’s constant get-rich quick schemes have left them heavily in debt and she can’t see a way out of the mess.
Bernard has suggested that she steal from the old lady she cares for and Jean, to her eternal shame, is considering the option seriously.
But Jean is about to find out that sometimes the treasure we seek is not the treasure we find…
The Rainbow is available here:
Kzine Issue 17 eBook: Graeme Hurry, Gary J. Hurtubise, Brian M. Milton, Peter DiChellis, Kristin Janz, Jackie Neel, Kennith O'Brien, Craig McEwan, Dave Windett: Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store
A personal note: Kzine is a quarterly magazine and, because of this, there is a long lag between acceptance and publication. It's been almost a year since this was accepted and I'd almost forgotten the story existed. When I recently received the proofs, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this is probably my best bit of writing to date. Needless to say I'm chuffed
