It seems that not only is our galaxy being pulled towards a dense cluster of galaxies, but it is also effectively being repelled by a void in space. See Milky Way being pushed through space by cosmic dead zone, say scientists

Is it pushing, or is there an effect that's akin to surface tension (i.e. the absence of anything attracting our galaxy in that void provides the impression that it's repelling us in some way)?


Although the cosmic cat shown the second image in the linked article may very well have something to do with it....

Good question, well asked. I suspect it's akin to surface tension - well that makes sense to my brain.
