Abandoned Dome city powered by geothermal energy

My brother is looking for a book where the inhabitants of a city on Earth are thrown into the far future. The earth is dying and there is at least one abandoned dome city powered by the Earth's core. The displaced people have to move to the dome city as their supplies are running out. Some sort of aliens are waiting for the earth to be abandoned before they can take it over. He also remembers something about a "Grady groat" engine. Any ideas what this book or short story might be or who wrote it?

Could it be the Night Land by William Hope Hodgson?

Written in a very archaic style to fit with the protagonist who is from the 17th century but linked to a far future self. It features a dying Earth and a dome powered from the core (known ae the Earth Current) but rather than aliens, those beyond the dome are called Abhumans
