So the title is a little bit of a lie as its not a film, but it is a continuation based on the script proposed for the sequel film. Found out about this only just now and apparently its out this month.

Do you know if this for a sequel that was originally planned, or is it a recent script?

I really don't know much; my impression is that its the older original script for the sequel that has been kicking around for a long while and never made it into production - so chances are between the long length of time and the conversion to comic it might well have changed if you'd seen any really early scripts.
