Need title: Tank commander looses his brain

I read this book in the late 80's early 90's.

It starts out with a tank commander searching for a lost tank I think in a desert in the US. When they find it all the people inside are dead and their brains are missing. Not long after the world realizes they are under attack from aliens.

The main character is killed. He wakes up in a confused state. Turns out the aliens were stealing their brains and inserting them into worker robots on a mining planet, but after a rock hit his robot he comes out of the stupor, figures out whats actually going on and begins to lead a revolt.

I re read this one (plague of demons) late last year. The protagonist actually wakes up with his brain in a super size tank (Bolo prototype?) in the middle of a far future war, not a mining machine.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll have to check it out. I have been doing research the last couple days and thought plague of demons had similarities to what I was thinking but didn't think this was it.
