I am looking for a classic sf short story, in which agents are sent to investigate an individual who proves to have a mutation that gives him the power to control minds (like the Mule in the Foundation series). Ultimately, they locate him, and attempt an assassination. The story ends with their minds controlled as well, and both agents believing the mutant is a God.

This reminds me of an episode of the old TV series Out of the unknown. "Stranger in the family" by David Campton. . . Not sure if it was originally a short story but I think the majority of episodes were based on existing short stories

I saw that years ago at a screening of old shows, possibly at the British Film Institute. According to this it was based on a play that David Campton wrote; original to him - Out of the Unknown: ‘Stranger in the Family’ (BBC2 18 October 1965)

I'm pretty sure it was remade in a later ITV series though can't recall the name of the series right now. Don't think it's the one the OP is after.

Reading the details I don't think it matches either.
Pretty close but no coconut...

Awestruck on this site!!!! first time I saw it on a computer tonight. all my other visits have been on different smartphones or one old tablet
