Paul McAuley's Jackaroo aliens

This concept seems strangely familiar after reading his two books about them.

Alien Emissiaries who initiate First Contact and then offer humanity a limited number of worlds.

What other series am I trying to remember? Does this ring a bell with anyone else?

Definitely don't know what book that is, but i like the idea of an alien species helping another to perpetuate itself in the cosmos.

"Hey we have a number of worlds that we enjoy, we noticed yours and that you were thriving, there's a few in the vicinity that would be beneficial to your species. Wanna have a go?"

The questions come to mind though, what would be an alien species purpose in doing that? Is it just evolved, enlightened, and wants our species to thrive? Does it want us to expand so it could harvest us like cattle? Does it need protection from another species from other worlds and knows that terror is coming in the future and needs an army of allies?

Only the future can tell.
