It's a very common thread in screenwriting for TV and Film. The writers are very often jilted through carefully phrased contracts and rights (or lack thereof) agreements. Hence the Screenwriting Guild boycotts from a few years back. They get pennies as well, compared to the vast majority. The studios consider it enough that you get a credit and that the NEXT job will pay you better. It doesn't work that way in reality though.
