Ok so this is one I read in childhood.

I can remember nothing of the author name, any of the character names and only loosely remember the plot.

So here is the information I have:

It was likely YA as I remember reading it in middle school so I would likely have read it during the mid 90s.

I remember there was a town and some sort of event happened, the event was these large mysterious cubes landed nearby the town and then lots of crazy things started happening. I am sure the massive cubes were made of ice and the people who were being affected by these cubes had some sort of ice powers.

The main protags were hiding in a shop in the local town as far as I remember.

I think it is likely a short or a fairly small novel.

Hopefully this jogs some memories and it is not something I just daydreamed during class (although a distinct possibility).

Thanks in advance knowledgeable chronners.

Probably isn't, but just in case - could it be Nicholas Fisk's Trillions?

That featured geometric objects falling from the sky, but I don't think they were made of ice, but were small shapes that could join together and make bigger shapes in imitation of the things around them.

Thanks guys,

I don't think it is Trillions and I am struggling to find the other recommendation. I will keep looking though.

Maybe Clifford D Simak The Visitors

I don't think it was this although it does sound vaguely familiar.

I am sure the cubes were like ice or something and I am fairly sure the aliens in question were not particularly nice.

I will rack my brains for anymore details and if I find the answer I will of course post it - or I might say what it is and disappear for four years... :p

Why not? There is precedent ha!

Possibly ''The gifts of the Gods'
Can't remember who wrote it

Doesn't really sound like your memory of cube shapes...

Gifts of the Gods" by Arthur Sellings -- Gigantic numbers of strange objects begin to appear in an English town. Their true purpose is unexpected.

(NOTE: This was from a review by Victoria Silverwolf, maybe she knows more of the plot)

Maybe Clifford D Simak The Visitors

I remembered a cover that sounded like what was being searched for and The Visitors was the cover. I don't remember the book but the reviews of the book on Amazon were uniformly horrible. I'm tempted to read it again and see if reading it when I'm in mid sixties is different than reading it in my twenties (at least that's when I think I read it.)

Yeah, Parson, the cover I have has a cube. The story plays the cube as inscrutable and mysterious. More cubes land elsewhere. Somehow, the protagonists eventually finds a way in and makes contact. It's been so long since I read it; I'm grasping here. I don't remember anything about ice.

Simak is not YA; but tends to be an easy read... };-}
