Ive been searching for this series and i cant find it and its driving me nuts. Ive read about 4 or 5 books so

What i remember about the series from is the following:

Scify space ship military captain gets sent misfit crews that he retrains. Ie. Crew member starts giggling at the worst time so captain has certain steps to help the crew member overcome that particular quirk. And on it goes with each crew member. Eventually the best of the navy also wants to be in his ship.

There is a genetically engineered genius multi billionaire thats more like a teenager that ends up liking this captain and starts to follow him in his personal yatch. Who also ends becoming a semi embassador because an alien ends up visiting the humans area of space.

Humanity cant pass by a particular boundary in space. Turns out eons ago a virus swept through all populated areas and humanity had been part of the galactic community and quarantined themselves in our part but now we cant meet other aliens and humanity forgot about the aliens.

The human governments know that aliens exist and some aliens visit the tourist places in the human part of the galaxy.

One book in particular was focused in going to an area of space where roumors had that a big entity was scaring ships from that part of space and the captain ship went to investigate. Turns out it was a human ship protected by aliens from.the virus.

Christopher Nuttall's Ark Royal series?

(I've not read any myself but someone on here recommended them recently so I looked them up)

No probs. That would have been too easy, I like ones where I search on and off for days/ weeks. Sitting up in the small hours giving it "Eureka"

The search continues....

It does indeed look interesting . Have added that series to my 'to get' list.

The search still continues...

OK i remember that the captain had a rule every time the ship was about to leave a planet or space station. He would say something like getting ready to take off and that would be the time that any crew member could say they wanted to get off the ship. In one instance there was a crew member that started crying because he didnt want to leave behind a girl in the station. He loved getting attention and he got kicked off the ship kicking and screaming.

Another time the whole ship was visiting a planet that is great for hospitality and they ended up visiting for weeks. Then the captain noticed that efficiency was dropping and that crew members started gaining weight. The crew ship also had the best score in the entire navy.

I think its from the 2000s. I just read it last year.

Definitely not the Vorkosigan books, to my mind.

I keep wanting to say Phule's Company (and the rest of the Phule books) by Robert Asprin. Some of it isn't right, but it's possible you've mixed them up with something else in your mind?

I wish it was the vorkosigan series. It is excellent. And its not the silverships either. Or phules either.

I remember in one of the books when they get to the barrier (trying to get in touch with aliens on the other side) that the captain of the ship and i think several other ships, set up a pattern where they run towards the barrier. So the vibration will be felt by the other aliens on the other side. And when they run to the barrier the human ships are turned automatically back towards human space and away from the barrier.

I know that the aliens can come into our space across the barrier but the humans cant cross the barrier at all.
