DISCUSSION -- MAY 2017 75-word Writing Challenge

I will be away at the end of the month and therefore unable to read all entries / vote. I believe it is therefore only fair I don't enter this month (not that I tend to get votes anyway, but just in case). If I come up with a story I'll post it here instead just for the fun of it, but I'm not au fait with urban fantasy (is it Mieville / Gaiman stuff?)

Can't agree with that, Dave. Being away is a genuine reason for being unable to vote. But, in my book, that doesn't stop you from entering. :)

Aren't you being a little unfair on us, by depriving us of your story...? ;):)

There are no rules about participants having to vote (although we'd prefer it if they did), just as there are no rules regarding whether non-participants can vote or not. If you don't feel that you have the time to come up with an entry, that's fine, but don't unnecessarily exclude yourself because you won't be around to take part in the voting.

According to Wiki:
Urban fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Urban fantasy exists on one side of a spectrum, opposite high fantasy, which is set in an entirely fictitious world. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements. However, the stories can take place in historical, modern, or futuristic periods. The prerequisite is that they must be primarily set in a city.
Basically, it's a rather wide genre.

The End is a rather tough subject. (Not that it hasn't stopped first day entries I note) I think I could swing UF, but TE has me stumped.

Okay, Urban Fantasy... and The End.... This sounds like a ripe pairing for me. Not for a story, but for something that brings about THE END!

@Cathbad .... God has spoken and the parasites are no more, but for some angels it is "A Hard Truth."

Great Story Cathbad.... I'd say the muse struck you early and hard and well!

@dannymcg
.... In the shadow land between Phantom of the Dracula and Frankenstein lies the end of "Theend."

@TitaniumTi .... A homeless man who knows the story of a sleeping beauty who refuses to live by the script and so becomes a "Runaway."

@Vaz .... Preach has left his pulpit for the war that haunts his dreams but awakes as one of the "Weavers."

And how can I ignore a story about a preacher who uses a cattle prod to attack the things that haunt the night?

I had an idea and went with it. A little depressing but given the subject. . .

In any case, good luck everyone. :D

OK, I went morbid. Seems somewhat appropriate. So Constable Dawkins and Bert, the mushroom scrumpying goblin, are consigned to the delete key.

I hadn't meant to post a story so early, given the problems I'm having lately, but (again) the idea just wouldn't let me go. I'm fond of urban fantasy, so this was a nice challenge for me, too.

Great entries already. It sounds trite, but it's going to be a tough month again.:)

The Hard Truth, @Cathbad – After the last trumpet has sounded there is one final revelation – that some angels still grieve our loss.

Theend. @dannymcg – Poor Igor – not only is his master killed but his speech impediment is cruelly mocked. Thhhimply dethhhpicable!

Runaway, @TitaniumTi – It’s a case of “unhappily ever after” in this twist on the classic fairy tale that leaves Sleeping Beauty sleeping rough.

Weavers, @Vaz – A vision of a future where society has been laid low and only the twisted remnants of our once-mighty technology can save us from the dark horrors that stalk the apocalyptic wastelands.

Irreplaceable, @Luiglin – A mage reflects on the transient nature of things. Remember, when dealing with magical ice and snow you shouldn’t dwell on it, you just have to let it go.

The End of the World will be Televised, @Talysia – Will hubris prove to be the protagonist’s (and our own) undoing in this story of old magicks and new media?

Thank you for the review, Parson. It's great to see you back on deck; I hope you're feeling wel

Sigh! My operation did not occur. (I wrote about this in the frustration thread.) I had an infection, an infected hangnail. Nothing more than that. But the operation did not happen. I'm now scheduled for May 12, so we will see how this goes. I should have lots of time anyway.
