I recently drew up a list of the 9 new must read fantasy books of 2017; I think that this can help you decide on what to read next.

1. A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

2. Norse Mythology – Neil Gaiman

3. Oathbringer – Brandon Sanderson

4. The Stars Are Legion – Kameron Hurley

5. The Collapsing Empire – John Scalzi

6. The Witchwood Crown (The Last King of Osten Ard #1) – Tad Williams

7. Assassin’s Fate (Fool and the Fitz #3) – Robin Hobb

8. Beren and Luthien – J.R.R. Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien

9. The Stone Sky (The Broken Earth #3) – N.K. Jemisin

I hope that your next best read is included in this list. Enjoy!

Can you elaborate a little on why you think these are the 9 new must read fantasy books of 2017?

I think that its hard to say that there are must reads when some are not even published yet ( Assassin’s Fate come out tomorrow - -- YAY!) and when we are not even half way through the year yet. Plenty of time for more great novels to appear!

I second Hitmouse's question.

Randy M.

And I third it.

Though I can help out a bit with Fitz and the Fool.

Getting into Fitz's story is a major investment of time and energy for a new reader at this point. Robin Hobb, (a psuedonym for Megan Lindholm), takes a very long time crafting her stories. She builds in politics, folklore, societal change, crafts, dynastic squabbling, romance, music, subtle magic, poisons, medicines and more. Certainly there are wars and sorcerous duels and fight scenes and assassinations but they are mixed in with a lot of slow burn narrative.

You don't watch these characters jump from fight to fight with a sarcastic quip here and an explosion there; they live and grow up and get new cloaks and make mistakes and lose friends and maybe gain them again over time. You get to know and love them to the point that you can get genuinely angry with them for standing in the way of their own happiness.

And this has been going on for a while, both in-world and in terms of sheer numbers of books. The book's started when Fitz was a child. Now he is old enough to be a grandfather, (but not aged or frail; because magic). Assassin's Fate is the 9th book about Fitz and the 16th one set in his world.

But if you are patient. If you like your fantastic worlds to be 'believable' and full of relateable characters. If you like the idea of magic that is more about psychology than about blowing things up with your mind. If you want to see a kingdom and a family change over generations.

Then this is the series for you.

Just to clarify, the original poster was trying to promote a blog post of theirs here, but has since been reminded that we don't allow self-promotion for members with less than 100 posts. However, the hope was that they might make the effort to discuss their thoughts here as well. :)
