Anyone is watching this one ? This is really a very sick society. It may be based on a Canadian writer, Margaret Atwood, but still makes me shiver.

Like *Better is never better for everyone*

It's an interesting book and there has been a film of it before. I'm awaiting some more reviews before I go back to it, as it will really depend how they focus as to whether it will annou me or not. I did watch the forst 10 minutes or so but was interrupted and haven't felt drawn back - but then I know the book very well having spent a year studying it and writing a paper about it etc.

Where is it on? Too much to hope it might be a freeview channel, I suppose -- I don't have Sky or any of the subscription thingummies.

From the Trailer I would say that this is very true to the world that Margret Atwood created. A Handmaid's Tale, is wonderful and may one day be considered "classic S.F." of the dystopian variety.

Anyone in the UK who is interested in seeing this, I've just noticed it's on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm. The blurb for it in my paper suggests they make Offred rather more proactive in rebelling against the system than she is in the book, which doesn't wholly surprise me.

Yep, she really surprised me in the last episode. I thought I'll watch the entire series *a sheep* telling us about the other rebellious one.

I was impressed with the first episode - a chilling atmosphere and well acted. It is many years since I read the book so I can't really judge how faithful it is the source material, but I thought it was very well made.

How "chilling" is it? For someone who doesn't like or enjoy horror is it something I would find entertaining? I love political dystopia but where I draw the line is pride prejudice and zombies. I heard it was horror-like and filled with some disturbing images?? Are the rumors true?

From what I've heard (haven't watched yet, take with a pinch of salt, etc), it's disturbing as all get out, but it's not splatter-gore. It's seriously horrific, but not in the zombie way. In the "watch as everyday human beings have their freedom and agency stripped away" way.

Not a zombie one, but horrific for us as humans. You can see in every episode people hanged or executed, women raped and treated as slaves, all in the name of a stupid and blind religion.

Yeah it sounded really good, so I was just wondering if it was genre horror and not just terrifying to people who never think about this stuff, because honestly that's how it seemed when I was reading blogs about how "terrifying" it was politically.

Don't get me wrong it would be a cruel world to live in, and totally relevant. However, as someone obsessed with religious fiction and political dystopia, I wouldn't describe it as any more "terrifying," than any other book from the genre.

Yeah. If you're well used to this stuff already happening in large portions of the world and the west turning a blind eye to it, you're golden.

Oops a bit of politics snuck out sorry about that.

I liked the last episode where we can see June's husband was indeed alive in Canada and received June's letter. (ep 7. *The other side*
Sorry, but I don't like her Offred's slave name.

I am a huge fan of the book. Margaret Atwood has a real knack for creating, an all too realistic dystopia. That's what makes it so chilling! I've watched the first two episodes and have to say that I am really impressed. I would say it is staying true to the book so far.

I certainly wouldn't say it was genre horror, but I found it an unsettling watch, which I guess is appropriate for the subject matter. To be clear though I have only seen episode one so far though.
