Another person looking for a book title and author

I read a science fiction novel a few years ago but can't remember the title or author. It's driving me crazy that that it can't remember what it was called. I can't seem to get it out of my head
It was set in a underground facility. Mystery items were being sent from somewhere unknown. There were scientists were trying to discover the functions of these items. Were they weapons? Who was sending them? In the end of the story it turns out in the end that the characters future selves where sending them back in time to their past selves. Medicine had made advances to prolong the lives of humans and the protagonist was now a captain of a spaceship.
I really don't know why the story still sticks with me today. I wish I could recall the author and title.

I think it's the book I'm looking for. I remember the author described the artifacts/items in great detail. I think it took place in the desert or some deserted area out West.

In the book I read, the author went through an elaborate descriptions on colorful crystalline object.
