Artificial Intelligence inspiration

I've been doing a lot of work on AI for work, and the general diabolical state of the world is leading me towards writing something cyberpunky distopian near-futureish. I'm spinning multiple ideas but every AI idea I come up with seems to devolve into Neuromancer.

What else can I read for AI inspiration? Fiction please. I've had more than enough real world tech info!

How about this? ;)

I haven't read anything written recently, so interested in replies like Stephen's for more modern writing.

I recently read This Perfect Day by Ira Levin. It has elements of Brave New World, We and 1984 and it also has that idea that was common in the 60's and 70's that we would all be better off if controlled by some super-intelligent machine, to take care of us and to make all those difficult decisions for us without any emotion. Of course that takes away our personal freedom and so the idea of bringing down the evil machine became a bit of a cliché - a staple of Star Trek episodes, and Colossus: The Forbin Project, 2001 among others.

Slowly, we are allowing machines to take over the day-to-day running of all our services and to make decisions on trading stocks and shares, betting odds, and ordering goods and supplies. One cannot read the Culture novels of Iain M Banks without wanting to live in that world with the freedom and security their benevolent AIs bring.

However, the idea that AI managed societies are bad news for us continues to this day, with the Matrix and Terminator franchises and even Stephen Hawking gets his views reported: Stephen Hawking warns artificial intelligence could end mankind - BBC News

Hi,

If you've been triggered to write something about AI, and can specify a dystopian future, would it really help you to read or watch anything else? (However, you should read Stephen's recommendation, of course ;) )

This may be redundant repetition of what you already know, but a walk often does wonders to unclutter or catalyse ideas for me. Especially if I am listening to a fertile playlist.

I had a similar post quite a while back and got some good recs (as usual, Chronners always amaze me with what they know.) I'll just pass on a book about A.I I was recommended and found interesting - How to Create A Mind by Ray Kurzweil.

Also, I agree with Phyre. A nice walk with a stirring playlist always does wonders for creativity.
