I agree about the voices, you almost can't help yourself. I caught my youngest reading it the other morning and he was doing a fair approximation of the voices that I used.

Just higher pitched.

As @Cathbad highlighted, it's the same with Dr Suess. Brilliant rhythmic writing that's so fun to read out load.

So wish I could write like that. I've given it a passable go on a couple of 75s / 300s but never to any great satisfaction. Maybe it's time to try again.

Ah, I see. My kids are more into princesses, fairies, mermaids, and the sort at the moment, though my 2 year old may like that story. My 4 year old likes to write stories with me, and actually has some pretty good ideas for children's stories. I have a feeling she will outsell me... And who knows? Maybe she is a future Chronner!

I'm feeling extra organised as well. That's good though, it'll force me to put the story aside for a couple of days and give it a final edit, instead of just throwing it against the forum wall and seeing if it sticks.

Can we hope it doesn't involve stately pleasure domes or Abyssinian maids playing dulcimers (nor albatrosses)?! (Just as well you didn't have any visits from a person from Porlock!)

I hope it was the former part of Kubla Khan before the memory faded. What an awesome start. Anyway, it ended up more Sylvia Plath than Edward Thomas, though I suspect he's in there too.

Do I have to pay royalties to the dead?
