July 2017: What are you reading?

Just finished a re-read of the Artemis Fowl books on audio and finishing up the most recent book in the Foreigner series. I think it may be time for a re-read of Nick Sagan's "Idlewild" trilogy. It's been years since I've red them and they're such a refreshing change from the typical post apocalyptic fare.

Finished this today:

Good action yarn. Never a dull moment without being hectic. Use of items tossed in for color and background turn out to be integral for story's conclusion demonstrating once more plot is better than plop. Well done Dr. White.

I've just started The Iron Lance, book 1 of Stephen Lawhead's 'Celtic Crusades' trilogy. I loved his book Byzantium so I've got high hopes.

Ooh, let me know how you get on. I loved Byzantium, too, but I could get into The Skin Map, which is a kind of Urban Fantasy/Sci fi he wrote.

Will do - just over 50 pages in and I'm enjoying it so far :)

Gun, With Occasional Music completed, not awful but not as good as I'd hoped.

Instead of picking up a proper book next I decided to squeeze in Binti and Binti:Home by Nnedi Okorafor on the Kindle, but once they're done it'll be The Stars My Destination - Alfred Bester

The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams. It's strange to read Williams' descriptions of the real world. I like his writing style, but I hope it doesn't get bogged down the way that chunks of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn did.

I'm still on the audio book of The Bone Orchard during my commute. Also have started Unfathomed audio book by Ralph Kern. I've read the book, but the audio version is great too.

I finished Dark Space by Jasper T Scott, and it was right up my alley. I've read so many awesome indie SF books over the past few years, and this ranks up at the top. I have the second book ready to go after I finish, The River is Dark by Joe Hart. This is my first Hart book, and it won't be my last. Highly impressed. I'm almost done this one, and also have the follow-up on my kindle.

I'm kicking off the month with R Scott Bakker's "Prince of Nothing" trilogy.
Think it's maybe the first of his work I've ever looked at :)

Enjoy! Stick with the first part, it soon picks up and the second book is phenomenal!

(Aargh, just seen you've given up already!)

Last night I began Bakker's The Thousandfold Thought, Book 3 of The Prince of Nothing Series

Catchup - read book 2 of Patrick Ness' trilogy, The Ask and the Answer. Found it rather unremittingly grim for YA fiction so taking a break for a while before tackling the rest. Re-read Sorceress of the Witch World by Andre Norton, which I enjoyed.

The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams. It's strange to read Williams' descriptions of the real world. I like his writing style, but I hope it doesn't get bogged down the way that chunks of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn did.

Read this many years ago and really liked it. It kindled an interest in Williams for me

Me too, only I found Memory, Sorrow and Thorn didn't live up to that interest. Far too formulaic for my taste. I did enjoy his Otherland books though which most seemed to hate...

Tried r. Scott Baker... Not in the mood. Trying Richard fox em ember war, but...

Looks interesting!

not into Richard fox either. but there's a new jennifer estep out :)

I just jumped on the R. Scott Bakker train by starting The Darkness that Comes Before in his The Prince of Nothing trilogy. I had previously read it years ago and didn't continue on with the series. Now I'm determined to keep at it, what with The Unholy Consult about to release next week.

I also started reading The Rediscovery of Man by Cordwainer Smith, a complete collection of his science fiction. First time I've read anything by this author, so I don't know what to expect.

I read a couple of White's Sector General books many years ago, and have been looking to read some more. They do not appear to be available electronically, and the reprints are surprisingly expensive.
