Revenger by Alastair Reynolds cheap deal

Ooh, nice, thanks Vertigo

Thanks, @Vertigo , I'd been meaning to pick up a Reynolds book for ages (somehow I've managed not to read any of his books to date:eek:) so it's now on my kindle.:)
I'd be a little wary of this being representative of Reynolds' writing. I've not read it yet but the various reviews I've seen indicate that it is Reynolds first attempt at YA but he doesn't quite pull it off and that the book doesn't quite seem to know if it is YA or adult. Certainly not his highest rated book. As a good standalone introduction to his writing I'd recommend House of Suns but unfortunately at £6.99 that is currently at the other extreme of good deals!

That said it does sound like a fun space adventure complete with pirates!

Having read it I agree he doesn't quite get the YA bit.
Reminded me somewhat of the Nights Dawn two sisters who set off on a journey around several worlds with a bit of The robot from Fifth Head of Cerberus thrown in.
I won't say more so I don't spoil it :)

Just reading through now. Thanks for letting us know about the discount.

It's a very different voice to his normal writing. I get the feeling he smashed this one out pretty quickly from the simple writing style. That's not to say it's bad (so far)... just doesn't particularly feel like a regular AR with their typically great integration of exposition into the narrative and characters who were nuanced.

It was ohhhhhhhh kay. I must say, I struggle to reconcile the author of this being the same who came out with two of my fave novels, Pushing Ice and House of Suns - which are some of the best modern SF out there. While this was entertaining, it hasn't sent me thinking or particularly wondering like those two did.

I suppose the acid test is, do I want to see more of this universe? And the answer is, "Yes."

Would I rather he push his energy into the kind of wide-sweeping, big-thinking work he is best known for? A bigger, "Yes."

I also get that sometimes one needs to recharge their batteries from that kind of story though, and if this has given the breathing room for something to percolate... I'm okay with that. AR hasn't dropped any in my estimations - IMO this is a station-keeping book to remind people he's still on the scene and maybe experiment a little. (With the YA / NA side and narrator voice).

The book started with a very YA feel to it, but just a few pages in, the mood started to change considerably. It quickly got creepy and then menacing. And then more menacing with every page I turned.

Not sure if I liked it. But I could not stop reading before the end and it’s stuck in my mind.
