Anyone else going this year? Saturday, 28th October, details here.

I've seen @Ursa major the last two years, and met @Mouse last year. @chopper, I think, is a panel member again.

It's a small convention, but usually good fun, and it's nice to meet up and have a natter (as well as attend some good discussions, of course).

I'm going... although I didn't get a receipt from Paypal when I eventually booked my ticket (as recently as last week)...

...which reminds me: I must email BristolCon to check that they received the payment** and have my details. (I got BristolCon's confirmation of my booking, so they should have my badge available when I get there.)

** - I may have to get a mini-statement from the bank to see if the money ever left the account.

Considering it.

If I do go, Mouse, I would genuinely be happy to buy a ticket for you and we can be Con friends (especially as I haven't been before).

I wouldn't mind chipping in
Well, that's three of us, @Mouse. If you can get to Bristol, we'll stand you a ticket. I'll even stretch to an orange juice for you. ;-)
And, before you say anything, I know you'd do the same for me - and I've had friends who helped me when I had a paucity of funds for a night out. It's what friends do. But, of course, it is up to you. Be lovely to meet Hoops, as well.

I'll be there, with possibly a surprise or two... ahem... depends... on stuff...
Now I'm curious.

EDIT: For those who've had the misfortune to meet me/see me about, I should perhaps point out my appearance may be changed slightly from last year.

You guys are so frikkin' lovely.

It's only because I want to go to Crufts next year and I'm waiting for the tickets to be available (they're saying 'October') so I'm saving the pennies for that. If it's not as expensive as I'm thinking, I'll be able to do BristolCon. And Hoops, if I do go, if you can make it so far as Ilminster, I can drive us to Bristol.

I'm surprised you haven't taken the train from Taunton(?) -- or Chard in the past? -- to Bristol Temple Meads. The station is only a few hundred metres from the venue**.

** - The first time I went to BristolCon, I spent almost an hour driving aroundthe city, completely lost***. I eventually followed the signs to the station to get to the hotel.

*** - This was around 8 o'clock the evening before the event... so it was dark, the traffic was heavy and, well, I have no absolutely sense of direction :(.

It was crazily busy the two times I went there (both times more than 15 years ago). Luckily, we were taken to and from the airport by taxi -- luckily because the venues for the meetings were south of the city (1st time, somewhere near Bray; 2nd time, Dún Laoghaire) and the airport is north of the city, requiring a long journey through the middle of Dublin.

But for transport craziness, Brussels is easily the worst place I've been. Rome doesn't come near it. In Rome, the number of lines of cars is what will fit across the road and so isn't limited by the lane markings; in the rush hour, this makes sense a lot of sense, and the drivers were relatively calm about it all. In Brussels, you can't, as a pedestrian, trust light-controlled pedestrian crossings to give you the right of way, as Belgium has strange rules about cars and traffic lights... oh, and the drivers are completely mad.

I come in from the North (obv) and the road down is great. The hotel is not too far into Dublin and N of the centre. I've been assured on a Sat it should be .... okay.

Malta was another ridiculous driving-place.

In Bulgaria, you step out into the road as if you belong there. Bluff the drivers into thinking they're supposed to stop, then be prepared to run if it's some fifty-year-old wood lorry with dodgy brakes. Did the same sort of thing in Morocco, and a few other places. The US was more difficult - no consideration for any other road user (mostly PA, NY).

Bristol's okay, so long as you remember they sell cars locally without indicators. :p
I get the train in from Gloucester. Staying overnight this time, to allow attendance of the evening functions.

It turned out that I hadn't paid using my debit card (so the bank had no record of a payment), but my credit card (confirmation arriving in the bill I've just received).

I can now check (no pun intended) what I'll need to show to pick up my badge.

Hmm. Apart from the panel on gender (which I'd probably arrive too late for anyway), none of the others really interest me so I think I'll be giving it a miss. We'll have to do a south west Chrons get together again instead!
