I went to bed and to sleep being perfectly normal (no sarcastic comments please!) but woke up with a black eye.
No swelling, pain or bruise.

Bottom half of eyelid black as though I'd been punched. Eye itself normal.
Wasn't aware of it until getting washed and glanced at bathroom mirror (aargh! What?)

Can you get like a small burst blood vessel or something that could have caused this?

Yes, exactly right, you can. I've had it before and it is apparently quite common. It doesn't mean anything dreadful.

However, I guess I should add that I'm not medically qualified and you should seek proper medical advice. I just wanted to reassure you. It should clear up in a week or so like a normal black eye would.

Had to go see head teacher yesterday cos one of mine had been in a playground scuffle.
She kept glancing at my new black eye and you could almost see the cogs turning in her head.
"Thug, thug! This man is as bad as his child!"

Yup. Second the need for medical advice. There could be some underlying reason and if there is, it needs finding. Undiagnosed hypertension can cause minor blood vessel rupture, I believe (although that more often comes out as a nosebleed) and any number of disorders can cause blood clotting problems and/or fragility of blood vessels. BTW, I'm not medically qualified either.

On a more general note - many British men leave it far too long before having potential or actual medical problems investigated. Don't be one of them. I was, once, and it didn't turn out well.

I once entered a grocery store sporting a black eye and the owner immediately began looking for a fight.
